Free Crochet Cocoon Pattern for Your Amigurumi Caterpillar

Because every caterpillar needs a little nap, right?

If you already made the mini crochet caterpillar free pattern, you are going to love this next one. Today we’re making the cutest little cocoon to go along with it, and honestly it might be even more fun to crochet than the caterpillar itself.

This free crochet cocoon pattern is super beginner friendly and takes barely any time at all. We’re talking a quick, satisfying project you can finish in one sitting. Perfect if you’re just getting into amigurumi toys and want something small and low-pressure to practice on.

The cocoon and caterpillar together make the most adorable little set. Great for gifts, great for craft fairs, great for making yourself happy.

Okay, let’s get into it!

No complicated stitches, no sewing pieces together, and it works up super fast. Honestly, what’s not to love?

The caterpillar tucks right inside the cocoon, which makes it the cutest little gift or amigurumi toy for kids. And there’s a built-in loop at the top so you can hang it on a Christmas tree, use it as wall decor, or clip it anywhere you want a little pop of cuteness.

Simple, quick, and adorable. That’s my kind of crochet project.

If you would rather have a tidy, ad-free version you can save to your phone or print at home, grab the PDF from my shop! It has all the photos and instructions in one easy place.

And a little bonus: the PDF bundle includes the cozy cocoon and the caterpillar, so you get two patterns for the price of one!

The cocoon is worked in two separate pieces. You will crochet the top first, then the bottom, and then attach them together. The finishing touch is a surface crochet loop on the outside, which adds a sweet little detail and makes the cocoon look extra polished. It is simpler than it sounds, I promise!

Before You Start, Did You Make the Caterpillar? This cocoon pattern is designed to be a companion piece to the free crochet caterpillar pattern. If you haven’t made the caterpillar yet, go check it out first! You can find the free pattern right here!

This pattern is written in US crochet terminology.

slst: slip stitch
sc: single crochet stitch
hdc: half double crochet stitch
dc: double crochet stitch

st, sts: stitch, stitches
dec: single crochet decrease
inc: single crochet increase

Rnd: round
FLO: crochet through front loops only
BLO: crochet through back loops only

Bobble-2-dc: Bobble stitch made of 2 incomplete double crochet stitches

One quick tip before you start: skim through the full pattern once before picking up your hook. It makes everything flow so much more smoothly!

Begin with cream yarn. Work in spiral rounds.

Round 1: 8 sc in the magic ring [8]

Round 2: 8 inc [16]

Round 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) * repeat 8 times [24]

Round 4: (2 sc, 1 bobble-2-dc) * repeat 8 times [24]

Round 5: 24 sc [24]

Fasten off.

Begin with cream yarn. Work in spiral rounds.

Round 1: 6 sc in the magic ring [6]

Round 2: 6 inc [12]

Round 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) * repeat 6 times [18]

Round 4: (2 sc, 1 bobble-2-dc) * repeat 6 times [18]

Round 5: (5 sc, 1 inc) * repeat 3 times [21]

Round 6 – Round 7: 21 sc [21] [2 Rounds]

Round 9: (6 sc, 1 inc) * repeat 3 times [24]

Round 10 – Round 11: 24 sc [24] [2 Rounds]

Round 12: (2 sc, 1 bobble-2-dc) * repeat 8 times [24]

Round 13: 24 sc [24]

Now, attach both parts of the cocoon by crocheting through both pieces. The bottom part should be closer to the hook handle. Insert the hook through the bottom part, then insert the hook through the upper part, slip stitch into the next 6 stitches, then fasten off. Weave in the yarn tails.

Attach white yarn on center-top of the cocoon, pull up a loop and chain 6, slst back into the top of the cocoon and fasten off.

Tuck your finished caterpillar into its little cocoon and get ready for the most satisfying reveal. If you are making these for a craft fair, I really do suggest making a whole basket of them. They go fast!

What yarn is best for this cocoon pattern? I recommend using a #6 Super Bulky yarn for the best results. The smaller size uses Premier Parfait Chunky and the bigger size uses Bernat Blanket yarn. Both give you that soft, cozy look that makes the cocoon so cute and snuggly.

Is this pattern good for beginners? Yes, totally! If you know basic crochet stitches like a magic ring, single crochet, and slip stitch, you are good to go. This is one of those beginner crochet projects that feels approachable from start to finish with no stressful steps along the way.

Does the caterpillar fit inside the cocoon? It does! The cocoon is designed specifically to fit the caterpillar from the companion pattern. Just make sure you are using the matching size for both, and your little caterpillar will slide right in perfectly.

Do I need to sew anything? Nope! This is a no-sew crochet pattern, which is honestly one of my favorite things about it. Everything comes together without any sewing, which makes it so much faster and beginner friendly.
