Choosing a skin tone is one of the most fun parts of making a crochet doll. From natural, realistic tones to cute fantasy colors, there’s no right or wrong choice – just what feels right to you.
I’ve shared a post on my blog about using cotton yarn for skin tones, but when I started working with plush yarn, it took me some time to find my favorite yarns and shades for dolls.

My Yarn Adventures (So Far!)
I love trying different yarn brands and styles, and I’m always excited to test new ones. For my doll projects, I mainly work with three types of yarn:
Plush Yarn (Chenille): Ultra-soft and cuddly, but it’s a bit trickier to work with.

Solid Cotton Yarn: A reliable classic with great stitch definition, smooth texture, and durability—perfect for well-loved dolls.

Blanket Yarn: Super bulky and squishy, ideal for quick projects and big, cozy dolls.

Chenille: Softness and Warmth
Premier Parfait Chunky and Himalaya Dolphin Baby is my go-to chenille yarns.
For brown skin tones, I often use Color Parfait 36 Teddy Bear/ Himalaya Dolphin Baby 80337, especially for my Julia baby ballerina doll, with a 4.0–4.5 mm hook.

For Tanned skin, 81 Almond Butter/Himalaya Dolphin Baby 80365 work beautifully with my mermaid doll.

My favorite peach tone is Himalaya Dolphin Baby 80353, which I use for my mermaid doll. I’ve also heard great things about Parfait Chunky 32 Shell, though I haven’t tested it yet.

Mercerized cotton
For solid cotton yarn dolls, I’ve had great success with several shades. For a lovely dark skin tone, I used Scheepjes Catona 503 Hazelnut for my Tony doll. I recommend you to use 2.0 – 2.2 mm hook for the mercerized cotton mentioned in this post.

For a soft peach skin tone, I recommend Schachenmayr Catona 255 Shell, which I used for my Rosie and Snowflake Elf doll. This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE peach skin tone to crochet.

For a warmer and darker tanned look, Catona 437 Sun-kissed is my top choice for my ballerina dolls.

More Cotton Favorites:
- Catona 507 Chocolate: A rich tone for dark-skinned dolls
- Catona 157 Root Beer: A deep, earthy brown option
Choosing the right skin tone takes some trial and error, but a good color palette makes it much easier. For more color choices, check out my previous post on cotton skin-tone yarns.
Blanket Yarn Textures
For extra huggable, chunky dolls, blanket yarn is perfect. I used it for my Julia the ballerina pattern, with 5.5 mm crochet hook, and the result was irresistibly soft and squishy.
Top picks:
Bernat Blanket Blush: A lovely light skin tone with a soft, delicate look

Premier Basix Chenille Bright 05 Caramel: A rich, warm brown tone with beautiful depth.

These thick yarns work up quickly and give dolls a plush, soft feel.
Choosing the right yarn is a journey, and I’m excited to keep testing new brands and sharing my findings with you. Thank you for reading! I hope this guide makes choosing your yarn a little easier. Have a lovely day!
